Parvovirus B19 (Fifth Disease)

Parvovirus B19 (Fifth Disease) - January 11, 2020
Posted on 05/09/2018

As of January 11, 2020, we have a confirmed case of Fifth Disease at Richmond PS. Fifth Disease is sometimes called "slapped cheek" syndrome because of the red rash it causes.

From the Ottawa Public Health:

For most people, Fifth Disease can be viewed as an unimportant rash illness. However, it can cause serious health problems for pregnant women, for people with chronic blood disorders, such as sickle cell disease or leukemia, and for those who have problems with their immune system. These individuals who have come into contact with someone with Fifth Disease are advised to consult their physician. Should you have any questions or concerns about this disease, please contact the City of Ottawa Public Health at 613-580-6744, or your family physician.
We ask for your help: If you suspect that your child has symptoms, please take him/her to the doctor. If it is medically confirmed to be Fifth Disease, report the information to the school office on the same day. Our telephone number is 613-838-2371.
